Great Northern War

Now that Gettysburg is all over and done with we can get back to some different periods, instead of ACW.

This weeks game was a Great Northern War game between the Russians and the Swedes.

Chris provided all the troops, mostly painted by Kent from 15mm Paint Shack.

The rules used for this game were Black Powder.

Some of the Swedes. Ignore the command stand in the background.

The Russians setup along the road and awaited the Swedish advance.

Swedish army on the move.

The cavalry clashes on the Russian left resulted in the Russian cavalry being thrown off the table.

Swedes charging the Russian line.

and on the other side of the gun too.

The Swedes lost both melees and both units routed off the table. Next turn saw another two units heading home!

The End!

After the failed attacks of the Swedish foot there was only one foot unit left and a gun along with the cavalry units out on the flanks. The Swedes conceded and abandoned the field!

Gettysburg

The battle of Gettysburg was fought on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July 1863. Now, 150 years later we are re fighting the second and third days of this famous battle on the 6th&7th of July in Christchurch NZ.

Here are some photos of a practise game based on the first day of the battle.

A SYW game

Last weekend a few of the Southern Strategists got together for a SYW bash.

All the figures are from Chris Packer's collection and the rules we used were "Die Kriegskunst".

The Prussians were charged with attacking an Austrian held village in the centre of the table.

The Prussian centre marches toward the Austrian lines.

Austrians defending the village church.

Prussian cavalry attempting to outflank the Austrian lines.

The Prussian right steaming toward the waiting Austrians.

Austrian cavalry coming to face the Prussian horse.

The first of several cavalry clashes this day.

Slow progress against the Austrians and some Prussian reserves getting into the action.

After several hours gaming the Prussians were very slowly pushing the Austrians back. With things going marginally in favour of the Prussians the Austrians conceded and began to abandon the field to the Prussians.

An excellent game and an awesome way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Thanks guys.

The Saga begins.

A couple of months ago we had our first games of Saga. By pooling our troops we had enough for three 4point games going on at the same time between six of us.

It didn't take long for someone to come up with the idea of a Saga campaign. After checking what the Internet had to offer I came up with some rules and, like a fool, offered to run the campaign.

So far progress on the campaign has been slow. Not helped by our being ejected from our number one Wargames room for the past 15-16 odd years and a couple of the guys having family bereavements to deal with.

Here are some photos of our first few games using the Saga rules.
