The Battle of Stackville

The quiet town of Stackville was rather happy to stay quiet. But then the civil war came to town.

Confederate troops stationed nearby the town found themselves directly in line of a Union army heading south.

The Rebels make good use of the stone walls around the town of Stackville.

The Union army advances up to take on the Confederates.

The confederates give the Union boys a friendly welcome.

The Union pressure the Rebel flanks while attacking the town in the centre.

Both sides trade shots as the Union get closer to Stackville.

The first charges from the Union are repulsed by the defenders.

The Rebels reinforce the town.

The Union build up to another attack.

The Union charge the town again, but it is the same result.

More pressure now from the Union right flank.

Still the Rebels hold out.

Union Zouaves are in the thick of the fighting.
By night fall the Confederates were still in possession of the town. The Union had no choice but to slink away to fight another day.

Rules used were Rank and File.

Fire and Fury

Our last game was an ACW game in 15mm using the Regimental Fire and Fury rules.

A bit of a meeting engagement with the Union attempting to secure a couple of crossroads. Both sides had reserves turning up to help out.

Initially the Union had superior numbers but more Rebels were on the way.

The Confederates moved up into the wood and the Union charged into them.
The more numerous Union easily pushed the Rebels back.
Confederate reserves arriving just in time.

The big Union regiments were proving hard to push back.
Rebel troops moving through the woods to the sound of the guns.

The Rebels have another crack at pushing the Union away.
But the result is the same again.
The Confederates are all pushed back and the crossroads are now in real danger of being over run by the Union.

The Rebels try yet another attack but still the Union hold.
Union reserves are sent toward the other crossroads.

The reserves meet each other on the other side of the wood.  But there is no going back for the Union.......
...... and the Confederates have no choice but to retreat away to fight another day.

A bit of ACW naval action.

A bit of a naval action for a change a couple of weeks ago. This time it was set during the American Civil War.

Three Confederate ironclads took on a couple of Union monitors.

The Union ships

The Confederates, above and below.

The Union engaged the Confederates early on with their longer range weapons.

The two sides close in on each other.

By now the Rebel ships have been taking a beating.....

....their best option now was to try and ram the Union ships.

C.S.S Arkansas wheels round and races after the closest Union ship.....

... and rams the twin turreted ship.

One down as the Union ships sinks from the ramming it had just received.
This left just one Union ship in the fight, but it wasn't for long. Another round of firing and the remaining Union ship lost it's engine. Dead in the water, the Confederate ships moved in for the kill!

The ships are all from David's collection and the cool sea mat belongs to Geoff.

2014 N.Z. Wargaming Nationals.

With the New Zealand wargaming Nationals being held in Christchurch this Easter the boys got together and put on a demo game as usual.

This time it was a decent sized Napoleonic game on a 12' by 6' table. Based on part of the Battle of Polotsk  17–18 August 1812.

Starting positions

Bavarians holding the town of Spas are under attack from the advancing Russians.

From the Bavarian side.

Masses of Russian cavalry trying to sweep around the French flank!

More Russians pouring through the centre.

The battle is about to be decided on the flack with the cavalry.

The Russians have now taken two of the three town sectors of Spas.

The cavalry about to meet!

The Bavarians briefly recaptured one town sector but are kicked right back out again.

The Bavarians begin to cross the river in an attempt to fall on the flank of the Russians.

The Bavarian cavalry fold under the Russian weight, just before a large body of French Cuirassiers arrive.

The Bavarian and French troops are forced to withdraw.

A very enjoyable two days spent pushing the figures around the table.

The rules used were General de Brigade and all the figures were supplied by Chris who ran the game for the rest of us.

There were a number of other demo games on during the convention.

Longstreet......

 Malifaux...

A post apocalyptic game....

and Sangin, a modern skirmish game.

To finish off here are some photos of some of the competition games.

The Flames of War layouts were very cool..

This is only a few of the FOW games as some of the photos didn't come out too well in the poor light.

Several 15mm Napoleonic games using Fields of Glory....
 some DBR (?) games.....
and some Dystopian Wars.

Numerous other game too but unfortunately I have no useable photos of them.

Unfortunately a number of people were unable to attend the convention this year due to the bad weather in New Zealand causing cancelled ferry crossings and cancelled or delayed air flights.
